New Zealand Schools Scholarship

The New Zealand Schools Scholarship is for middle and high school students from Vietnam to study at a selected New Zealand school for one year.  Future proof yourself for success with a New Zealand Education!  If you want to prepare for the future with one of the world's best education systems, then this scholarship is for you.  New Zealand schools offer a new way of learning and a wide range of subjects that will help you gain creativity and critical thinking for the future skills you want.

36 New Zealand Schools Scholarships are available for middle or high school students. Each scholarship provides either a 50% subsidy on the full-year fees, or a 30% subsidy on the full year school tuition fees [four terms]. One of the He Tohu Hiranga scholarship winners will be selected for a 100% tuition fee subsidy of the first year of study.

Scholars must study in New Zealand for a minimum of one school year (40 weeks/4 terms - not including holidays), commencing in Term 3 starting 22 July 2019 at the latest. [Term 3 ends 
Friday 27 September. Term 4: Starts Monday 14 October and ends no later than Friday 13 December for secondary and composite schools. Term 1 starts Between Monday 27 January (at the earliest); and Friday 7 February (at the latest), 2020

To apply, you must:
  • Currently be in Grade 8,9, or 10 in a Vietnamese middle school or high school, and
  • Be a legal citizen of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and
  • Be aged between 13 and 16 years at the time of application, and
  • Meet the GPA and English requirements for the Award of your choice, and
  • Be able to take up the New Zealand Schools Scholarship for a minimum of one school year (4 terms), commencing no later than 22 July 2019

Value of the Award:

There are two types of award on offer:

The He Tohu Hiranga (Excellence) Award

This award provides a scholarship to the value of 50% of tuition fees for the first year of study.
Applicants for He Tohu Hiranga award must have GPA 8.5, and IELTS 6.0 (or PTE 50, or TOEFL iBT 70)

The He Tohu Awhero (Ambition) Award

This award provides a scholarship to the value of 30% of tuition fees for the first year of study. 
Applicants for He Tohu Awhero award must have GPA 8.0, and IELTS 5.5 (or PTE 42, or TOEFL iBT 54)

Selection Criteria:

The scholarships will be awarded on academic excellence and merit of the expression of interest submitted by the applicant. The selection panel are looking for candidates who clearly demonstrate they are motivated to come to New Zealand to prepare themselves for their future. They have researched the benefits of a New Zealand education and know what they want to get out of it. 

Required Documents/Information:

  • Proof you are a Vietnamese national, e.g. screenshot of passport
  • A notarized copy of your school report for the 2017-2018 school year that shows your GPA
  • A notarized copy of your school report for the first semester of 2018 – 2019 school year that shows your GPA
  • English certificates (IELTS, or PTE Academic, or TOEFL iBT)
  • Provide the name and contact details of your parent(s), guardian(s) or caregiver(s). We will contact them for you to take part in the scholarship programme if your application is successful. 
  • Provide the URL to a short video (max 90 seconds):
    • include content, images and audio that introduce yourself, and why you think you are the right candidate to be awarded this scholarship
